No. 4 of my 2018 world series challenge is St Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow.
Saint Basil’s Cathedral (more officially named The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed) is a church in Red Square, Moscow. The building was built from 1555–61 by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. The building, now a museum, is shaped as a flame of a bonfire rising into the sky. It’s design has no parallel in Russian architecture. It was completely secularized in 1929 and remains a federal property of the Russian Federation. The church has been part of the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
The illustration is 29 x 29cm created with acrylic and ink on acrylic paper. One of the great cathedrals of the world and instantly recognisable for it’s original details and many colours. I’d love to explore the sights of Red Square, a draw more inspiration from it’s unique architecture.
