No. 6 of my 2018 world series challenge is the Berliner Fernsehturm.
The television tower close to Alexanderplatz in Berlin-Mitte was constructed between 1965 and 1969 by the government of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It is easily visible throughout the central and some suburban districts of Berlin. Its height of 368 metres (including antenna) is the tallest structure in Germany, and the second tallest structure in the European Union. It also serves as a viewing tower with an observation deck at a height of 203 meters, as well as a rotating restaurant. After the German reunification it has become the citywide symbol of contemporary Berlin.
The illustration is 29 x 29cm created with acrylic and ink on acrylic paper. We enjoyed a very cold January weekend here in 2014, seeing a few choice sights and making the most of the warm welcoming hospitality Berlin has to offer. As with many of Europe’s capitals there’s just too much to see in one visit. Although it was fun to explore in the snow, i’d love to return and see the city as i’ve painted here… in the warmer colours of the Spring.
