No.13 of my 2018 world series challenge is the Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles.
Griffith Observatory is a facility in Los Angeles, California, sitting on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. It commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including Downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. The observatory is a popular tourist attraction with an excellent view of the Hollywood Sign and an extensive array of space and science-related displays. Admission has been free since the observatory’s opening in 1935, in accordance with the will of Griffith J. Griffith, the benefactor after whom the observatory is named.
A very pink illustration created with acrylic and ink on paper. This location stars in one of our favourite films of the last few years, La La Land. It’s a wonderful vantage point over the city. During the early evening the observatory has that eerie cinematic quality and the different shades of sky over the valley open up lots of opportunity for expressive and creative colours. In fact this illustration does feel like a traditional colour study for a much bigger piece… perhaps a big feature canvas later this year!
