You might have already seen examples of the paper diorama pieces that i’ve been working on over the last year, but these two new additions are something a little different. Here’s ‘The Phoenix Cinema’ created with acrylic and ink on paper, before being cut out and raised slightly from a dark backing paper. It’s a fun night time effect when placed inside a black box style frame. The Phoenix is an independent single-screen community cinema in East Finchley, London. It was built in 1910 and opened in 1912 as the East Finchley Picturedrome. It is one of the oldest continuously-running cinemas in the UK and shows mainly art-house films. The films listed here are my own edits. I could have chosen many different movie titles, but there are many more great independent cinemas (with wonderful characterful architecture) so i’m sure i’ll have opportunity to showcase all my favourite films!
After completing the Phoenix and feeling pretty happy with the results! I moved straight onto this Newcastle gem.The Tyneside Cinema is the city’s only full-time independent cultural cinema, specialising in the screening of independent and world cinema from across the globe. The last remaining Newsreel theatre to be in full-time operation in the UK, it is a Grade II-listed building. Alongside its core programme of feature titles it holds daily free screenings of archive newsreel footage.
What do you think? do you like the ‘night time’ dark effect? As with my of my mini series, i’m always keen to hear suggestions… what cinemas would you include? what independent gems do you think should be included in a n independent cinema series?
