Who doesn’t like a lighthouse? This example from St Augustine in Florida is particularly striking with a black and white twist up the central column. Topped with a distinctive red the ‘St Augustine Light Tower’ stands at the north end of Anastasia Island and was built between 1871 and 1874.
I started looking at reference for a potential St Augustine commission and couldn’t help putting together this little box study. As with a few of my recent paintings, i’ve cut the main subject away from the backing. Raising it above the surface of a painted horizon.

I seem to regularly make decisions on gut instinct and wonder why I made the afterwards. Looking back on this one, I think the circle on the backdrop was to add more suggestion to the roundness of the tower. But overall the cutout seems to work and is a pretty simple and hopefully fun effect.

Here’s a little video I made to swing the viewpoint from one side to another. Not quite like seeing on the wall but hopefully shows it in some sort of context. Nevertheless i’m excited to maybe start working on a bigger Florida piece soon.
