This was a lovely project to work on, a very different subject matter on behalf of a wonderful institution. I was asked to create an illustration that showcased new clinical research facilities at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. The new facilities opened at Evelina last Spring, but due to the global pandemic they have been unable to show those who supported the project and helped to raise funds. The digitally scanned imagery would be used for a thank you card, with the hand crafted original to be sold at a charity auction. As there were a few conceptual elements to try and work into the piece I decided to build the composition within one of my theatrical box frames. The layers would hopefully create something truly unique for the original painting. But it would also be easy to scan each layer and adjust the artwork for use on stationery or emails. The animation above shows the layers after scanning and a little digital cleanup. The photos below show the hand cut painted layers boxed and ready for auction. The Evelina’s new mascots are a wolf and a seal, the icons are used to decorate the walls and ceilings of each ward… both needed to appear within the artwork. Then we had nods to the scientific research (microscope, DNA) and that impact of sharing knowledge internationally (gold disc featuring a European map). It’s a busy piece, but hopefully it all ties together to make a dynamic image. It’s certainly different to anything i’ve made before, so fingers crossed it also does well at auction later this year!It was wonderful fun working on this painting. Thank you to Sophie for commissioning me and best wishes to the staff on all the Evelina wards! If you have a commercial or charity project you’d like to speak to me about, you can get in touch with the studio here.
