Last week I escaped to the West country for a much needed Kernow inspiration break. Opportunities to travel have been so limited recently, so the chance to visit one or favourite UK spots was VERY welcome. I took the kids and they spent pretty much the entire time on the beach… exploring the rocks, surf and tidal pools.
I also had a couple of forays out to the cliff top. It felt wonderful to reacquaint myself with a proper sketchbook… one with thick enough paper to throw some watercolour at. I even found the spot where I sat sketching (and learning how to use my new iPad!) on a previous visit here. Although this was a very down to earth and back to basic version… but lots of proper soft pencil marks and quick brush strokes to soothe my creative brain.
I’m not one for proper plein air painting… but I suspect there’s a few rock formations that really should be on some sort of feature canvas. I keep feeling drawn back to certain spots and although I do like my architecture and urban spaces; I would love the challenge of trying to capture this incredible landscape in my style. If my commissioned work doesn’t lead me here I will end up doing them for myself eventually! We’re already booked to be back here again next year… so fingers crossed I can find that time soon.
In a few weeks time we’ll also be heading to the other end of England, with a return to the North Sea coast of Northumberland. It felt so good to be out there again… so i’ll definitely be packing my sketchbook again and seeing what I can capture.
