It feels like I haven’t stopped with festive projects since last Christmas! The one I have to share with you today came in right at the beginning of the year (after I had just about recovered from the previous holiday season). Here’s my very snowy take on the Liberty department store in London… ‘Christmas at Liberty’ made for their 2022 chocolate advent calendar.

Christmas at Liberty - Illustration by Jonathan Chapman

If you’ve followed my work before, you may have spotted a previous painting of the Liberty facade (I do love my architecture; and the Liberty building is a fascinating one). Well they also spotted it and got in touch to ask if that painting could be adjusted to make it more Christmassy. A request i’ve never had a problem with! I took the original artwork and reworked it using the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil. It’s incredible how it can help mimic the hand made. Although I think I still prefer to have the majority of the artwork done as traditional paint on real paper. Regardless I think the combined result was pretty good. Here’s some product shots of the square cropped Chocolate advent calendar…

There’s also a paper version too; filled with a different Liberty print pattern behind each calendar door. Unfortunately (at last time of checking) the chocolate version has already sold out! I don’t know if they will be restocking… but with two months to go before Christmas you would hope they might be busy trying to make some more!

If you’d like to try and find a copy; here’s a link to the Liberty Christmas Shop! Sadly they didn’t send me any samples… but it was a joy to see the artwork appear on the website. ‘Christmas at Liberty’ certainly fulfils one of my illustrator bucket list projects!
