Here’s a commissioned piece I created back in December. It’s an evening study of the Hammersmith Apollo in London. ‘Jack Dee Live at the Apollo’ was created as a gift, celebrating the comedy series which performed here from 2004 and aired on BBC One until 2015. Jack Dee was the very first host; presenting for two series before passing the baton on to a guest host for future programmes.
The live entertainment venue where the show is performed is currently named as the Eventim Apollo for sponsorship reasons and formerly known as the Hammersmith Odeon. It’s an Art Deco Grade II listed building originally built as a cinema called the Gaumont Palace.
‘Jack Dee Live at the Apollo’ was made with acrylic and ink on paper. The painting was cut with a scalpel and raised from the background; with the layers presented in a dark box frame to give my favourite theatrical effect. Here’s a video to try and show the layering… and those little areas that reveal themselves when moving the eye around the frame.
Huge thank you to Joanna for asking me to create this fun painting and finding me a good architectural challenge! If you’d like to commission a gift artwork like this one? drop me a line or have a little browse at my private commission guide.
