This week we had the shock of a big blank wall, left empty by the departure of my big Winchester canvas. The ‘City of Winchester’ painting has been sitting proudly in our new extension space since its completion last year. And it has almost found a new home many times since its original exhibition in 2018. At one point there was talk of exporting it to Singapore for a family with a Winchester connection… but after all the near misses I’m delighted to finally see it installed here in the city which inspired it. Yet it did leave me with a gap to fill at home in the Chapman Gallery!

Now on Display in the Gallery

I picked out three more local scenes. My ‘St Catherine’s Hill’ landscape study, ‘Sun on the High Street’ featuring the Buttercross and a rather expressive sky over King Alfred title ‘Rainclouds Over the King’.

I love the way the colours stand out in the clean white space. The studio is always filled to bursting with works in progress and stock for retailers, so it feels a bit chaotic. Whereas this really is a lovely room to showcase the work and host viewings. It does make me think about bigger exhibitions though and it has been a few years since my last one. Hopefully there will be a collection of original works that I can put on display soon. Although gathering enough paintings can also take time; especially if I have the happy problem of selling canvases regularly. So I’m going to start putting work aside for that. And maybe towards the end of this year or Spring 2025 I will have a new show forming. In the meantime… we have our little Chapman Gallery to highlight a few choice pieces!

If you’d to call in for a viewing, please contact me at the studio. I generally work during school hours but can also make arrangements for opening up evenings and weekends on request.
