Presenting another self-initiated architectural study, this time featuring the iconic dome designed by Sir Christopher Wren with my own festive twist. ‘St Paul’s Cathedral Winter Flurry’ is perhaps a whimsical title… but there’s no doubt that I wanted to create this one with a card and decoration in mind. As well as challenging myself to the intricate line work of the dome shapes and all its supporting columns.

‘St Paul’s Cathedral Winter Flurry’ (2024) acrylic and ink on 30 x 30cm canvas. Presented in a black floater frame.

I’ve embedded my time-lapse capture below. As well as showing you some of my process… It’s becoming a useful tool for myself, to look back over the decisions and layers that help build each piece. The picture has a grey tone in places, but I quite like the ghostly quality of the building’s outline against the darker sky. It’s certainly a different feel to some of my other work and very busy with the inked details.

This one will go into my growing collection of Cathedral studies and i’m certain it wont be the last festive design for this year. There’s definitely a few more that i’d like to finish in 2024, even if they don’t end up as items in the studio shop until 2025. It’s one of my goals next year to approach more stockists and grow the wholesale side of the business. I’ hope’m hopeful this illustration will find a good outlet in London. If you know any local shops that might like to feature my designs, please feel free to get in touch: https://linktr.ee/illustrationbyjonathan.
