I have an archive box of paper illustrations in the studio. A precious trove of previous paintings that I really need to pull out and display. It’s one of my missions for the year, to see more of those archived pieces listed on the website. And I’ve started here with a little framing experiment that had also been playing on my brain. This Radcliffe reframe is a new presentation for me, a black wood with a matching (thick cut) matt black mount. It’s quite the cinematic feel and it certainly brings ALL the colours to the fore. Below are some photos of the artwork on the wall. Along with a video of the painting details.

This Radcliffe Camera painting from 2017 was one of the featured illustrations for my England Originals project. It has been in that box waiting for some care and attention. It came to mind after completing my recent Oxford Rooftops study, where the Radcliffe Camera is again a focal point.
I don’t remember where the black on black idea came from… but I’m quite drawn to it. It’s different and it will be an distinctive option for certain pieces. Some of the most interesting framing I’ve seen recently has embraced the bolder colour choices in mounts. But it wont work for all. So i’ll also try to take the time to capture each city illustration or landscape study in a traditional neutral white mount.

Timelapse: Radcliffe Camera ()
It’s also a great opportunity to share the time-lapse I captured 7 years ago! It was one of the first paintings captured from above and using a rig for my camera. The top-down angle has been a great way to see the work in progress and I’ve used it regularly.
This original is now listed on my studio shop and also listed on SaatchiOnline.com. I’ll be photographing more of my archived paintings in the weeks ahead.
As always, I love to hear your suggestions, so please get in touch with those interesting places you have discovered. I’d particularly like to hear from you should you have Oxford suggestions?
