I love a good vibrant pub painting! This one seems particularly bright and cheery, which probably speaks to the wonderful time we had visiting Dublin last year. ‘The Temple Bar, Dublin’ is fresh off the easel, complete with its eye-catching red frames and lush box planting. The pub sits at the heart of the Temple Bar area of the City and is renowned for it’s daily Irish music. A fun subject for a small travel illustration!

Although it was hard to capture at this scale, I was very much drawn to the vintage ads and sign work. The cobbles were also quite tricky to replicate. So the line work tries to hint and suggest those outlines, rather than define every single shape. Perhaps that embraces the Impressionist spirit… or perhaps it’s just lazy!
Here are some photos of the framed up piece. I’ve presented it in a fully studio built floater frame. It’s a wooden construction, painted black for a nice defined edge. I feel the choice of black framing also brings out the best of the line work too.

Below I’ve embedded the time-lapse capture of the painting in progress. I even managed to record the final drawing stage. That often requires twisting and orientating the canvas that can make the video awkward. But I think it works OK.
