I tried to capture a delicate sunrise over Winchester for this new painting of the Upper High Street. I’ve always enjoyed how a City can be beautiful and quiet early in the morning. And I find it fascinating how the collected sound of those urban spaces changes through the day. This is quite a still image for my recent Winchester studies. I hope it has a gentle warm tone and a pleasing calmness. It was also a great excuse to feature Warren & Son, one of my longest running retailers and stockists for many of my local greeting cards and postcards. The stationers has been at No. 85 since 1859!

Upper High Street, Winchester (2025)
The painting was completed on my current favourite surface, a 30 x 30cm thin profile canvas presented in a floater frame. It has a nice impact on a wall, but does take up tons of space. I do love the opportunity to spread out into a larger canvas… but there is something wonderful about an exhibition wall filled with a patchwork of these smaller pieces.

Here’s a time-lapse of this latest painting. It’s not the first time I have studied the Warren’s facade. I also created a cutout diorama a few years back and even worked on feature graphic (an ink drawing of the carved stationers sign) for the shop to use on their bags.
A Winchester Book
I hope to gather a collection of my Winchester paintings into a new book. This new Upper High Street scene will certainly feature. As soon as I have a clearer outline of the book I will share some previews. Perhaps even open up for early interest.
