Following very quickly on from the Hercules commission, we have more West End excitement. Evita has just started its limited run at the London Palladium and LW Theatres asked me to create another diorama to celebrate the opening. There’s already plenty of press coverage for the show, with Rachel Zegler singing its most famous number from the exterior balcony to the crowd outside. My cut out artwork focuses on the architecture and takes some lettering inspiration from the strong blue branding the marketing team had created. I particularly enjoyed how the star (a graphic theme that recurs through all the posters and ads) emerges over the central statue high above the buildings facade.

The balcony features of course… with the layered paper raised from the background to create this boxed diorama. I have already had the pleasure of working on those Palladium columns, twice in fact. But when you shift your view around the frame, I still love the way different architectural details can be revealed in this exploded format. To save on time within the short deadline I adapted the line work from the previous projects. Adding some tweaks and playing with the colouring. There’s always a couple of new things to evolve too. This time we picked out the PALLADIUM letters individually. Fiddly but well worth the effort! Even with the print reproductions, each cut is subtly different, those little human ‘errors’ in the shaping with the blade and constructing/balancing with glue creating something unique.

Evita Diorama, a Quick Video Tour!

Sadly I didn’t have the opportunity to hand deliver these. Just too many deadlines crashing together. But I was delighted to get 10 of these hand sculpted artworks away with the courier in time for their press night. Another huge thank you to Charlotte and LW Theatres for commissioning this latest theatrical piece. I’m now going to go and rest my sore fingers from all that cutting!!
