Steep Hill - Photograph by Nicky ChapmanIt’s been a tough slog during the last couple of months, working through a huge pile of project work that finally looks to be finished (Just in time for some last minute festive illustrations! yikes!). So this weekend we particularly enjoyed our trip up to Lincoln to meet with friends. Staying at a hotel in the city, we found ourselves up nice and early on Sunday with the clock change. Here’s a couple of photos taken in the crisp morning air.

We walked up Steep Hill and took in the the Cathedral views. It was as stunning as ever in the Autumn sun. Stepping inside we enjoyed a moment in the quiet atmosphere before the morning service began. In the photo you can just about make out the bell being rung at the top right of the aisle. It reminded me of the scene setter I illustrated last year featuring Sir Joseph Banks. The project required a moodier light to the lovely glow you’d normally find. Hopefully there’ll be opportunity to create a few sunnier versions soon…

Lincoln Cathedral - Illustration by Jonathan ChapmanDuring the drive home that afternoon I spent a long time gazing at the cloudscapes. They seemed to be whipped up into lovely painterly compositions. Or maybe that’s just how i’m looking at skies lately! don’t be surprised if you see these formations appearing in my work sometime soon.
