A fresh canvas to share today! For anyone who follows my social feeds you might have seen this new City Museum Painting has been long in the making. It probably wasn’t that many weeks, but it feels like it was a work in progress for some time. I shared a colouring page outline of this one a while back. With this one I was aiming for vibrant Winchester Cityscape. A colourful new view to add to my #PaintedCities collection.
So here’s my ‘City Museum and Cathedral Walk’ (2024), acrylic and ink on canvas, 70 x 50cm (75 x 55cm in its floater frame). I thought i’d try a bolder black frame for this one, but I might also take a look at a softer option with a white edge. I think ‘Cathedral Walk’ refers more to the passage to the right of the Cathedral building and through to the square where the Christmas market is hosted. But i’ve always enjoyed the framing of the facade as seen from The Square… and so wanted to give a nod to the idea of wandering/passing through this place. Plus the City Museum building had lots of details that felt well worth a painted study.
I’ve embedded the time-lapse capture below… for anyone who’d like to see the process. Quite expressive in the beginning. It was particular tricky once all the work on the Cathedral was being covered by foliage. Finding the balance between leafy and losing the recognisable elements on the building felt a little precarious.
I’m VERY slowly putting together a new series of Winchester studies. I hope these will supplement my existing catalogue of paintings from the City. Perhaps finally get a book together.
