This scene is from the historic city of Winchester in Hampshire. The statue of King Alfred stands guard over the High Street, with the changing colours of autumn on St Giles Hill as it’s background. This is Ham Thornycroft’s imposing statue of Winchester’s most significant royal visitor. A remarkable combination of soldier, statesman and scholar earned him the title ‘the Great’ – an honour bestowed on no other English king.
